Welbeck Street car park was designed by Michael Blampied and Partners in 1971 for Debenhams department store on Oxford Street. The building has a distinctive diamond-patterned facade made from prefabricated concrete.
In 2016, the multi-storey car park was purchased by Shiva Hotels to make way for the Marylebone Lane Hotel which will have 206 rooms, a spa, restaurant and rooftop terrace. The resulting development could be worth as much as £600m.
A proposal by architecture studio JAA investigated the viable solution of creating a hotel within the existing fabric of the car park. This proposal not only provides a new possibility of dealing with the redevelopment of Welbeck Street car park but also shows a positive attitude towards regeneration. Also, an online petition tried to save the building, but eventually it didn’t pay off.
